It has only been 2 weeks, but here we are again with another major award show red carpet! The 2014 Grammy Awards took place last night and the women looked stunning. Soft tone colours and metallic was once again an ongoing theme on this red carpet, however only a few stood out.
Below is our list of the best dressed at the Grammy awards 2014.

The 71st Golden Globe Awards was hosted by the two very talented and funny ladies Tina Faye and Amy Poehler. As funny as I find these two a big part of any award show is what the stars are wearing.
At this years Golden Globe’s champagne and grey seemed to be the popular choice of colour. However, this did not stop some women from wearing bold colours and designs that allowed them to stand out in the crowd.
Below is our pick for the top 5 best dressed at this years Golden Globe Awards.
Lupita Nyong’o
12 Years a Slave star, Lupita Nyong’o, in a Ralph Lauren cape gown. The colour and cut complimented her skin tone and body shape very well, easily making her one of our top best dressed picks.

Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett usually is one to watch on the red carpet every year, this time was no different. She wowed us with this Armani Privé Fall 2013 sheer lace gown.

Amy Adams
Amy Adams can do no wrong on the red carpet. This Valentino two toned gown is simple, but still bold. The sexy low cut neckline on this dress shares a similarity to the plunging necklines we saw Adams wear in American Hustle.

Mila Kunis
Mila Kunis opted for a grey Gucci canvas dress. The detailed sequins and flower embellishment at the neckline is what brought this dress to life.

Kate Beckinsale
Another who chose to wear metallic is Kate Beckinsale. She wore a beautifulZuhair Muradgown. The pattern detail helps show off Beckinsale’s amazing body shape.

Mercedes-Benz Start Up is an annual competition for start-up fashion designers hosted at World Master Card Fashion Week and it is focusing on talented fashion designers across Canada. With the promise of ongoing mentorship, a solo catwalk during fashion week next season and editorial support in FASHION, one of Canada’s leading magazines, the grand prize is highly sought after. It was obvious there was no shortage of talented participants for the competition, as each of the eight lines presented were exceptional in their design and execution. At the end of the show, the grand prize was awarded to two winners instead of one for the first time in the competition’s history.
The first winner, Malorie Urbanovich, is an Edmonton based designer who showcased not only beautiful easy to wear pieces, but nostalgic 90s throwbacks. Malorie Urbanovich has given us permission once again to find love layering simple silk dresses with boxy plush cardigans and sweaters. The outfits were reflective of design as a whole in architecture and interior design, with a minimalist, comfortable and unpretentious feeling. Any of her pieces would be a timeliness addition to any wardrobe for Spring 2014.
The second winner, Celine Raizonville, hails from Montreal with her urban chic line Matiere Noire. During the show, Celine presented soft, feminine boxy pieces from her Spring 2014 line in soft solids and bold horizontal striping. The neutral colour palette of black, white and oatmeal often had a punch of plum, a colour usually reserved for darker fall colours. The colours were a refreshing change for a Spring collection. Her collection was rounded out with quirky visors and a youthful socks-with-heels look. For all of the reasons listed, it is clear why a deadlock took place between the judges. Each line encompasses a perfect balance of fresh style paired with favourite attributes from fashion past. Any piece from either collection not only support Canadian fashion, but independent fashion designers as a whole.
NYFW Spring 2014 – Day 6 we were all back in the tent except for Melissa’s offsite jaunt to shoot ICB in the afternoon. We covered lots of shows today for the trend report and for media footage. Maryna and Shalanda headed backstage at Badgley Mischka for behind-the-scenes footage and ran into John Legend and his girlfriend Chrissy Teigen. Backstage at Alon Livne, Arielle interviewed the namesake, Israeli designer, who started designing when he was 17. We covered backstage for Zang Toi, and wrapped up the evening attending the last show at 9pm by Fashion Shenzhen.
FIT/STYLE: A trend is a fad, a craze, the latest hotness, and a style that has been trending all week has been longer length in skirts in different fits: A-Line, Pencil, Drop-Waist, Assymetricals, and more!! There was very little deviation from this trend on Day 6. Jenny Packham, Badgely Mischka, & Naeem Khan sent feminine silhouettes down the runway displaying the variety in skirt styles. Alon Livne sent down warrior/Amazon princess inspired garments, that looked like each model was wearing an embellished breast plate and ready to go to battle! I loved it!
COLOR: As mentioned yesterday, more and more color is appearing, but the overall theme of whites, pastels, & other neutrals has still been the focus. Naeem Khan sent garments down the runway with a beige base, but colorful appliques:
EVENING WEAR/OCCASION: There was a prevalence of evening wear gowns showcased on Day 6 of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Almost every designer sent down a jaw-dropping stunner. A lot of fluidity in the gowns, with lots of movement. Long cape trains, and lots of fabric that billowed in the wind.
Ladies and gentlemen here is our NYFW Day 5 recap! We have made it past the halfway point! On Day 5 our team was once again all over the city of Manhattan. We started together at Lincoln Center in the morning, but by the afternoon, Craig and Arielle were offsite at BlacMera for an interview and Shalanda headed to the Alice & Olivia presentation in the meat-packing district. Finishing up the evening, Arielle attended the 9pm show by Libertine, back at Lincoln Center. Throughout the day we ran into multiple celebrities from world-renowned photographer Nigel Barker to Paris Hilton! Here’s our trend report from Day 5 of New York Fashion Week.
FIT – Just when we thought everyone was going with a looser fit, outside of Lubov and Max Azria’s Herve Leger collections, we have discovered another runway collection by Falguni & Shane Peacock that also love to show off the curves of the female form. Despite Falguni and Shane, the majority of collections show yesterday still featured A-line skirts, fit and flare silhouettes and asymmetrical hems. Pamella Roland favored the high-low, asymmetrical hem for a lot of her garments from dresses to tops. Short in the front, long in the back.
Pamella Roland / Maryna Marston – www.squareearthstudio.com
FABRIC: Sheers, Sheen, & Vinyl. Falguni had fun placements of sheers in their collections, and Cesar Galindo played with shimmer in his dresses for his CZAR collection. Pamella Roland showcased a cape jacket that looked like it would be perfect for a rainy day! Shiny fabrics like taffeta and lame seem to be a popular choice over the last few days, especially in the Libertine Collection.
Pamella Roland / Maryna Marston – www.squareearthstudio.com
COLOR: The BlacMera collection showed off a beautiful array of garments in yellow and blue. Yellow and purple are the complimentary color pairings, but Yuliana’s pairings were perfect for each other! The right shades of yellow to pair with blue. Black and white were still popular color choices in collections that weren’t print heavy like Pamella Roland and Alice & Olivia. Collection with tons of print were more colorful, like Libertine & Falguni & Shane Peacock.
PATTERN & PRINT: As always lots of print and mixing print on the runways, especially at Falguni & Shane and Libertine. Stripes and big patterned prints were used on the Pamella Roland runway. Alice & Oliva focused on prints similar to houndstooth, etc.
Day 4 was crazy as ever, just like the other 3 days. Our team went offsite to Chelsea to see Ricardo Seco’s Spring 2014 collection at Eyebeam studios. Mara and Arielle captured interviews with Joanna Mastroianni, Ricardo Seco and Melissa interviewed Jackie Fraser-Swan, the designer behind the Emerson label. Emerson was the last show of the night at 9pm and for celebration of our work, we went out on the town! Well not really, we went to the rooftop bar at INC48Hotel called The Press Lounge (How fitting for our media group), and then went for late night eats at Market Diner in Hell’s Kitchen. Needless to say it was a late night for us, but we love to give you the trends for the day…even if they are a little late :-p.
COLOR: Color seems to be popping up more and more as the days of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week pass us by. By default Custo Barcelona’s runway had a bunch of color due to his use of very busy, colorful, graphic prints. Joanna Mastroianni, being the master of evening gowns that she is, sent gorgeous gowns of color down the runway.
FIT: The continuing movement away from tighter than tight garments is evident in the long A-line skirts and drop-waist dresses presented by DVF. Both DVF and Custo Barcelona showed their love for the popular trend of the week: Crop Tops. Custo presented a lot of Box-shaped jacket, moving away from the typical fitted trench-coats seen in the Spring.
Custo Barcelona / Photographer Maryna Marston – www.squareearthstudio.com
PRINTS: Black and white prints, were the main focus of DVF’s runway, along with some graphic prints. Joanna Mastroianni opened her show with a bunch of fun black and white patterns too! Custo’s collection was almost all prints in all kinds of designs and colors with a heavy focus on mixing prints.
FABRICS: Custo Barcelona sent a lot of metallics down the runway bringing the shine and shimmer that we’ve been missing from Days 1-3. Woven fabrics made an appearance on his runway like mesh.
ACCESSORIES: Visors are no longer just for tennis players! Custo Barcelona sent fun visors down the runway in the same materials as the garments. His collection of colorful, Mix-print shoes will be favored by any girl, looking to express her artistic side this Spring! Vivienne Tam would love to see the socks and sandals trend return, as a few of her models rocked that trend from a few seasons back on the runway.

Day 3 was full of lots of shows for me to attend. I ended my evening at 10pm after the 9pm Venexiana show. What a day of exciting Fashion! Team M&MS (Mara, Maryna, and myself Shalanda) started early in the morning backstage at Ruffian for designer interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and a chat with the lead hair stylist Nick. In between shows Maryna and I hung out at the press lounge presented by Samsung galaxy to edit photos and generate this trend report for you from the Day 3 Spring 2014 Collections of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week! Enjoy!
COLOR – Day 3 introduced the first collection that focused on bright, neon colors and that was Mara Hoffman’s vibrant Spring 2014 collection. Son Jung Wan presented pop of neon using a vibrant yellow hue for some of their garments, but mostly they stay with the color white. Still the overall theme for Day 3 remains steady at pastels, white, & beige and surprisingly darker hues of blue, green, red, & purple that would typically be seen in Fall collections. Designers overall are really moving away from the bright, neon trend.
FABRIC – Sheers, Sheen, & Leather. It’s no secret that sheer fabrics are in, and they have been for awhile. The Lacoste brand added chiffon elements to their sporty looks, elevating them from gym chic, to street chic. Ruffian favored fabrics with sheen, and created jackets, dresses and suits in sateen materials. Leather was a popular choice in Jill Stuart’s collection.
GARMENT TRENDS – Crop tops, and peek-a-boo cut-outs were popular choices in the Charlotte Ronson & Jill Stuart collections. Charlotte also played around with menswear inspired embellishments in her garments using Peter Pan collars, and illusions of ties and suspenders.
PRINT – Florals, Stripes, and more emergence of plaid. Plaid was seen at Ruffian, & Charlotte Ronson.
FIT – Lots of ankle pants, A-line skirts, and longer shorts & dresses.
HAIR & MAKEUP – Big hair was featured on the Son Jung Wan runway, while Ruffian inspired by vintage French aristocrats presented the side wave on their models. However, braids returned in a big way via Mara Hoffman with her models donning the longest braids I’ve ever seen to compliment her collection
Day 2 collections showed the same trend as Day 1: very little in the bright & warm colors and more contrast pairings using pastels and bold hues of black and cool colors (think purples, greens, and blues). Beiges, rose and other flesh tones were popular across the board. Neon, which was so popular for a few seasons, seems to have run it’s course.
Nicole Miller / photographer Marina Marston www.squareearthstudios.com
PRINTS – Stripes are still holding strong, and florals are always a popular choice for Spring. Instead of abstract prints with designs placed sporadically, prints for Spring 2014 are streamlined and concise, following exact lines and rows as seen in the Noon by Noor show. With this streamlining, prints are taking on a more geometric feel. Bold trimmings give the appearance of lines and geometric shapes, further cementing the movement to print conciseness.
Noon by Noor / Photographer Marina Marston www.squareearthstudios.com
FIT – Welcome back length! From Rebecca Minkoff’s shorts to Nicole Miller’s knee-length skirts, the return of modest length to the female silhouette is a refreshing change after a season of (sometimes obscenely) short bottoms from yesteryear. Designers are also moving away from the skinny pant trend, and offering more options in pant leg fits from straight-leg (Noon by Noor) to palazzo pants (Argentine Designers)
Noon by Noor / Photographer – Marina Marston www.squareearthstudios.com
MAKEUP & HAIR – Though a bold red lip was seen on the models in the Nicole Miller show, the continuing theme of “enhancing” natural beauty was the popular choice for the designers. The models were again styled with that beach-tousled, wavy hair and crown braids.

A giant warehouse, an oversized lumberjack style plaid shirt, top-notch street style and great music could only be all at FAT Fashion Week. Well, that is what I have been led to believe since moving to Toronto. You see I’ve never had an opportunity to attend FAT being from the east coast, but so many people love this ‘alternative fashion week’. I was wholeheartedly not disappointed. I had the opportunity to attend the Thursday night events on April 25th and watch six runway shows out of nine.
What FAT really specialized in was bringing the art scene back into fashion. Of course that seems obvious by the name, but if you’ve ever attended other fashion events you would quickly learn that it is not the case. I had to notice that fashion and art here was really at its core. There wasn’t a ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ feeling of pretention and ‘that’s so last season’ that you may expect. Instead, it was a venue for people who love fashion as an art form and use it as an expression as ones self, not as a status symbol. It was everything fashion should be and it was beautiful.
The patrons at FAT for the most part did not wear high-end big brands, but really rocked the more rare pieces from smaller designers. I’m used to opening conversation with somebody during Fashion Week by commenting on a person’s newest big designer item, but at FAT, you would have instead asked where they purchased the item as so many people were wearing indie. Because of so many unique brands and styles being put together, FAT has amazing street style. Even between fashion shows, you were treated to unique pieces, wearable art and many beautiful combinations. When attending a previous fashion event earlier this year, I noticed that while yes, everybody had beautiful style and a chic way to wear items the event was lacking on the street style front. Where was the fashion and beauty that inspired street style blogs and popular photographers like The Sartorialist? Where are those people who love to mix high-end fashion from decades past with local favourites? If you don’t know Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist, you should check it out here. You won’t regret it. It was of course the shows themselves that displayed the most creativity, but the patrons attending were a close second. FAT bar-none had the best street style.
The runway shows were also a great mix of art and fashion. The first three shows of the evening had an edgy rocker and sometimes-gothic theme. Many of the pieces were wearable, but of the first three shows they each sported something that was un-wearable and simply for art. The next set of three shows featured more wearable pieces that focused more on beautiful tailoring. These shows made you anticipate what you would like add to your wardrobe more than shock value. Below is one of the better shots I had taken, evidently with my favourite piece of the night from the emerging independent fashion designer B.E. Shields.
For better quality images, have a look at the FAT blog on their official website and you’ll get an idea of the creativity that takes over the runway.

Last week, while most people were heading back home after a hard day’s work, I joined Ana Caracaleanu (owner of Acara Fashion Boutique and founder of Luevo) at MASHUPAFFAIR2012, an event thrown by Homegrown Boutique & ItsMusicFashionLife.com.
This fabulous networking event was held in the beautiful Homegrown Boutique, a small store located in the heart of Yorkville, Toronto’s fashion high end fashion district. Welcoming visitors with a glass of bubbly and tantalizing hors d’oeuvres (not to mention take-away containers prepped for sweets), the boutique offered designers and fashion experts from Toronto a chance to sneak a peek at some of the latest, and trendiest, items to hit the shelves including this beautiful dress, pictured right, accessorized with a classic pocket watch adorned with the signs of the zodiac; stunning.
After having a chance to roam the goodies, on, and off, the shelf, the owners welcomed make-up artists from Inspire Cosmetics, who shared industry knowledge and offered free makeovers to all in attendance. While Ana enjoyed a relaxing makeover, I had a chance to speak with a few attendees who were really pleased with the event and advocated what the boutique stands for, particularly midst such a competitive industry.
So, what is the message? Apart from their exquisite taste in finger food, Homegrown Boutique’s major selling point is that it specializes in Canadian designer clothing and accessories. As per their website, fashion items featured at the boutique are targeted for the “independent woman who loves to flirt with fashion”. All collections are designed in Canada, and many are at least partially produced right in Toronto. In addition to producing beautiful pieces and throwing top-notch get togethers, Homegrown Boutique is doing a great job helping local talent, find a home.
