Meet Desire’e Marie Design
Designed by Desire’e Voight, Desire’e Marie Design is classically feminine, handmade women’s clothing that is inspired both by past and modern trends. Desire’e makes each garment with a feminine edge and sources the best fabrics for each creation.
We sat down with Desire’e and asked her a few questions about her life as a designer and her label.
Luevo: What goals have you accomplished that you are most proud of thus far, when it comes to Desiree Marie Design?
Desire’e: I did have a few goals with my business for this year, and they were to get published in a fashion magazine with my designs, and to sell in a boutique. I have been published a couple times this year, and my dress was even cover of Elegant Magazines 2014 Feb Issue. I am also currently talking with a boutique, that found me through Tampa Bay Fashion Week.
Luevo: What is your favourite thing about being a designer? What path would you have followed, had you not become a designer?
Desire’e: My favorite thing about being a designer is that its my artistic outlet that I get to share with the world. If I would not have followed my design career, I may have decided to continue working full time for my fathers Medical Gas Service company as the office manager.
Luevo: What do you think has helped you most with your designing to date? Persistence. I am trying to always be better with my skill, and that involves experimenting which has a lot of fails before the win. I know I want to always be better, and to always be creating.
Desire’s: What obstacles have you had to face and overcome to get where you are today? From begging my dad to take out loans for me to go to fashion design school, to paying those loans off today, a lot of money goes into creating fashion. I am still needing to work all week for my dad, but hope to go full time with my business.
Luevo: What inspirations did you draw on to create this collection?
Desire’s: I started with pastel colors, and an image of chiffon underwater that really inspired me to do a dress collection inspired by the sea. Staying true to my label, the collection is girly, unique, and fashion forward, and without knowing is 1950’s inspired. These dresses are great for parties, bridesmaids, and wedding guests.
Luevo: What is the thing that makes all this hard work and effort worth it for you?
Desire’s: Mastering new sewing skills makes me feel accomplished and proud, but seeing others in my designs and seeing them love it, makes it all worth it.
Luevo: What was the turning point in your career that made you say “Yes I’ve finally made it”?
Desire’e: I think I am still in the mist of “making it”, but I do feel very honored when I get to make wedding gowns for brides. I have always felt that wedding gowns are the pinnacle of sewing, the bride puts all her trust in you for her big day, makes me feel apart of the party.
Luevo: How would you describe your process of inspiration? What do you do to keep your ideas fresh and interesting?
Desire’s: My process of inspiration is similar to many designers, I first research the color forecasting trends for the upcoming season and usually get a few ideas for directions that I want to go. Then I start a couple mood boards, now pinterest makes its easy, and narrow down what direction I want to go. I do love getting very involved in the inspiration process and make it very clear throughout my collections.
Luevo: If you could describe your new collection with one word, what would it be and why? What would you say the overall theme of this collection would be?
Desire’e: Siren. The overall themes are sea, mermaids, girly, 1950s, party dresses.
Luevo: How did you start your design journey?
Desire’e: My grandma would make us clothes, blankets, bags, and even taught me how to sew at a very young age. My mother later would take me to the thrift store and that’s where I found my love for fashion, because I was able to purchase a lot, experiment, alter, and learn styling.
Desire’e is showing her Spring/Summer’15 collection at Fashion Week Tampa Bay and we are excited to have made available a select number for pre-order on Luevo.
